Stray Kids’ Bang Chan Learned His Japanese From TWICE’s Sana, Mina And Momo — And Even Uses Their Dialect

“I was going to talk with Sana, Mina and Momo every day…”

Stray KidsBang Chan may be a total ace as an artist, but there is still one thing he feels he has yet to achieve, and that is being able to speak Japanese comfortably. In a live stream on April 3 he revealed that he’s been studying it ever since he was a trainee, but though he hasn’t yet reached his goal, he’s come pretty far with the help of TWICE‘s Sana, Mina and Momo.

When a fan commented that Bang Chan is good at Japanese, he denied it, saying that he thinks he should be better at it than he is.

Originally he had meant to practice with Sana, Mina and Momo every day, but it didn’t end up happening. And it’s no surprise, as the members of both groups are constantly busy!

Bang Chan did, however, manage to learn the dialect of the region where the TWICE members are from, though he did it without even realizing. He said, “Without even me knowing, I ended up using their dialect.”

Momo’s hometown in Japan is Kyoto, while Sana is from Osaka, where the regional dialect is the Kansai dialect, which is not one single dialect but rather a group of dialects from the Kansai region. The Kyoto and Osaka dialect is known as the Kamigata dialect. Mina also learned the dialect from Sana and Momo, and helped Bang Chan learn it in turn! Bang Chan related how, when people are surprised to hear him speak in the Kansai dialect he always has to explain that he got it from the TWICE members.

It’s great to see more of the wholesome friendship between Bang Chan and the TWICE members, especially that they took the time to teach him their language when they are all so busy. We can’t wait to see how much further Bang Chan’s Japanese progresses with the help of TWICE!
