Korea’s Method 2, the world’s first piloted, bipedal robot, is transforming Gundam fans’ fantasies into reality.
This larger than life bot was designed by Hankook Mirae Technology, a Korean robotics company that is paving the way for the future. This company’s slogan literally translates to “People That Create Robots”, so yeah, they know what they’re doing!
According to the Hankook Mirae Technology’s chairman, Yang Jin-Ho, Method 2 has been designed to work in locations that are too hazardous for humans to safely work in without heavy duty protection.
Potential industries include manufacturing, disaster relief, and the military. Method 2 could even work in entertainment!
Speaking of which, if this robot looks familiar that may be because it was co-designed by Vitaly Bulgarov, the same entertainment designer who conceptualized robots for blockbuster sci-fi flicks like Transformers, Robocop, and Terminator.
Method 2 also bears a striking resemblance to the Mitsubishi MK-6 Amplified Mobility Platform (“AMP” suit) from Avatar.
Anyone can see how impressive Method 2, but these stats will give you some perspective about just how massive this metal beast is.
Method 2 is over 3.9m tall, making it 3.5x taller than Star Wars’ R2-D2 (1.09 m).
It weighs an astounding 1.36 metric tons. That’s 3x as heavy as a grand piano!
The arms alone weigh 130 kg and are 4x wider than the typical American man’s armspan.
It also has incredible mobility capabilities. Unlike similar machines, Method 2 is the first of its kind to place the pilot within its body. Incredibly, the machine mimics the motions of its pilot, allowing it to function like a gigantic, superpowered human!
