Lee Dong Wook Breaks Gender Stereotypes By Taking On Traditionally Female “Gumiho” Role

He’s not afraid.

Lee Dong Wook is returning to the small screen in 2020 with his upcoming tVN drama. He is confirmed to play the main role of a gumiho or nine-tailed fox.

According to Korean legends, a fox lives a thousand years until it becomes a gumiho.  It then transforms into a beautiful woman who seduces men to eat their livers or hearts.

This otherworldly creature is always portrayed by females, such as Shin Minah‘s famous character in My Girlfriend is a Gumiho.

Lee Dong Wook is the first male to play this creature on Korean television, making it a serious break from usual gender stereotypes.

This is not the first fantasy role that he has taken on. He previously played Wang Yeo, a grim reaper in the hit drama Goblin (2016).
