Jo Su Mi is a famous Korean soprano who has just received a hugely prestigious honour from the Italian government. Opera is an Italian cultural export so the practice of opera singing is held very dear there which is what prompted Italy to honour Jo Su Mi.
Su Mi received the Order of the Italian Star (Ordine della Stella Italiana) and was granted the title of Cavaliere (Knight) for her contributions to facilitating bilateral exchanges between Korea and Italy through music.
The Italian ambassador to South Korea Federico Failla presented her with her medal and knighthood in a ceremony held at the Italian embassy in Seoul. The embassy praised her superb interpretation of Italian opera.
Jo Su Mi was a part of Georg Solti’s Grammy Award Winning recording of Strauss’ Die Frau ohne Schatten and now she has another fantastic honour to her name.
