BTS’s Suga Reveals His True Feelings On The “2021 GRAMMYs” And Why He’s No Longer Intimidated By American Award Shows

There were good and bad parts.

BTS‘s Suga recently sat down for an interview posted on Weverse Magazine. He discussed a variety of topics ranging from his love for his family to his appreciation for his company.

He also looked back on key parts of his career, with one question he answered being, “How did it feel to be in the lineup for the Grammy Awards, one of the icons of the US music industry?”

Last November 2020, BTS finally secured a GRAMMY nomination. “Dynamite” was nominated for “Best Pop Duo/Group Performance,” and although they ultimately did not win the award—Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande clinched the win with “Rain On Me” —it was still an overall dream come true for Suga who was never shy about the GRAMMYs being his dream.

In the interview, however, he admitted that the award show wasn’t all glitz and glamour for him.

The feeling was less immediate because we couldn’t be there in person, and it wasn’t a huge distinction.

At the very least, their performance of “Dynamite” was something he enjoyed: “But the performance made me think, ‘This is different, because it’s the GRAMMYs.'”

Suga expounded on his view of American award shows. Among BTS’s first U.S TV appearances were the 2017 Billboard Music Awards, the 2017 American Music Awards, and the 2018 Billboard Music Awards. While he was nervous at first, he gradually felt more comfortable and confident.

What changed my view from the first time I went to an American music awards ceremony was, the first time I went, I was really scared of the world’s biggest music market. But when I look back now, I don’t think I had any reason to feel that intimidated.

Now, four years after the group’s first appearance in a Western award show, Suga is finally in his element: “To be honest, I have only now begun to enjoy the awards ceremonies; I wasn’t able to then.”
